Government Contracts
Millers Falls like many other tool companies sold tools to the government. The following is a list of contract numbers with a corresponding “Federal Stock Number” recorded from several boxes. More research is needed to see how many different types of planes were sold under a government contract.

The Federal Stock Number was used from 1955 to 1974. Using 5110-180-0831as an example, the 5110 is the Federal Supply Classification Group (FSCG). Breaking this number down further the 51 is the Federal Supply Group (FSG) and the 10 is the Federal Supply Classification (FSC). The 180-0831 is a unique items serial number (FIIN). After 1974 they changed the name from Federal Stock No. to National Stock No. and added a -00 after the FSCG so the new National Stock number for the old Federal Stock Number is 5110-00-180-0831.
From the list above, the one entry that does not look correct is the No. 9 type 3. The type 3 ended in 1948 and the Federal Stock Number started in 1955. Also, the FIIN number is different from the other No. 9. The different FIIN number could be that one plane has a smooth sole and the other has a corrugate sole. Anytime you are doing research, multiple examples of the same model are a necessary to validate the entry.
